Growing Food – Growing Communities
Saturday 15th March 2008 – Inverness
High School
The 2008 HEN Conference will be based
on the very topical theme of growing food in school and community spaces.
The conference will be held at Inverness High School
and will be a one day event containing a series of practical, hands on activities and workshops. Workshop topics include:
setting up a community garden; therapeutic gardening; gardening with young children; secondary school perspective; developing
allotments; growing fruit trees; container gardening; and improving biodiversity in your veggie patch!
Enthusiasm and uptake of the HEN Plot
to Pot project has shown that there is considerable interest in this topic and also a demand for practical information and
support. The choice of topic also reflects local and national priorities in promoting health and sustainability in schools
and the wider community, as well as the environmental impacts associated with our food choices. As
ever it promises to be a fun and inspiring event and we look forward to seeing many of you there. Conference fees are kept
low at only £10 per person, accompanied children free of charge. All the
relevant booking documentation is downloadable below

HEN Conference 2007
Environmental Arts for School Grounds and Community Spaces
Saturday 12th May, Grantown Primary School
This
year the HEN conference was held at Grantown Primary School
on Saturday 12th May 2007. Over 100 people came from as far afield
as Caithness, Eigg and East Kilbride! The eleven workshops provided inspiration, practical
advice and plenty of opportunities to try new activities.
We
must thank Grantown Primary and Nursery School as well as nearby Anagach Community Woodlands who helped us put on
a programme of workshops that had a wide appeal to HEN members and have left a lasting legacy to the conference
hosts. The workshops included: living willow sculptures; outdoor murals; painting playground games on tarmac; biodiversity
and art in the garden for pre-schoolers; storytelling and music-making; making the most of digital photography; setting up
a community arts project; designing playground shelters; ephemeral forest sculpture trails; and art from woodland finds.
Thanks
to Scottish Natural Heritage, Awards for All and Hi-Arts for their generous funding support.
Further information
and photos will appear soon!
HEN Annual Conference 2006
Grounds for Action
"Grounds for Action "
HEN’s AGM & Annual Conference 2006 – Grounds
for Action
This year’s annual HEN conference and AGM which was held at Kirkhill
Primary School on Saturday 11th March.
The theme of this year’s conference was Grounds For Action, focusing on sustainable
development for school grounds and community spaces.
2006 sees the start of the UN decade of Sustainable Development Education and HEN, in conjunction
with CSV Action For Sustainability, chose to mark this with a practical event which will highlight how SDE can be demonstrated
and delivered in school grounds and community spaces. The Grounds for Change
conference represented a new approach for HEN both in the emphasis of providing training and in contributing to the school
and community development plans of the conference hosts (Kirkhill Primary School and Kirkhill & Bunchrew Community Trust). The day included
a series of workshops providing hands-on training sessions in activities including vegetable growing, compost and wormery
systems, living willow structures and scrap art sculptures, planting a wildflower meadow. Other workshops covered
playground games, wildlife investigations, community gardens and energy, amongst others. The conference also provided information
on local and national sources of support, funding and inspiration. Moira Leslie, Headteacher at Raigmore Primary School was the keynote speaker, and short presentations were also given by Grounds for Learning, and CSV Action 4 Sustainability. The school and community were involved in conference
planning and many of the training providers worked with them in the months preceding the conference.
A
full report on the day is availlable, including contact details of workshop providers, details of funders and a summary
of the responses on the feedback forms.

Do you want to get more involved with HEN?
HEN is a Regional Environmental Education
Forum (REEF) and every year HEN members (newsletter subscribers) are invited to join the management committee. The HEN committee is made up of representatives across the public, voluntary and private sectors as well
as a growing number of interested individuals. The Highland Environmental Network
management committee meets about every two months to oversee the functioning of the network, which includes the newsletter,
website and annual conference as well running specific HEN projects. Committee
members enjoy the rewards of a regular networking opportunity to share information and to forge positive partnerships for
projects. If you are interested in getting involved and wish to discuss what
is required of a committee member, just call HEN secretary Sheila Wickens for an informal chat 01349 868627 or e-mail sheila.wickens@highland.gov.uk.
