Up and coming Highland events

A Highlands Waste Education and Awareness-raising workshop took place on October 18th  at Glachbeg Croft, Tore.

The purpose of this workshop was to bring together all those involved in waste education and awareness-raising in schools and the broader community in the Highland Council Area.  SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) and HEN worked in partnership to deliver this event, which will be the starting point for a Highland-wide Waste Awareness Plan.  The notes generated during the workshop are now being brought together as a single document, which will be circulated widely for consultation as part of the process of creating a Highland-wide education plan.

Opportunities for community recycling

Networking Buffet and Seminar

Cairngorms, Tues 1 & Wed 2 Nov 2005

The event is FREE and open to interested individuals from other rural areas and agency representatives as well as people from within the park boundaries. The seminar will be preceded by a Buffet Reception for delegates on Tuesday 1 November between 4pm and 8pm. The reception will also include a tour of the Cairngorm Mountain Centre. The reception and tour is FREE to delegates attending the event. A limited travel and accommodation bursary is available. Please email va@srms.fsbusiness.co.uk for more information.

Visitors to national parks anticipate a high level of environmental performance in the park.  Community recycling can contribute to this performance whilst attaining other local benefits.

Zero Waste seeks to promote a healthy community without waste. It advocates meeting human needs through infrastructure design and resource use that works in harmony with natural systems.

Zero Waste is a design philosophy that can help communities achieve a local economy that operates efficiently, sustains good jobs, and provides a measure of self-sufficiency.

Community recycling initiatives offer a range of positive outcomes to communities including the creation of job opportunities, training placements, production of end products that can provide a valuable service to the community, e.g. furniture and white goods’ recycling, re-use of paint, compost, and increased waste awareness.

l22 1RB 4:15pm

The proposed seminar will aim to:

• Raise awareness of the potential of community recycling in the park area

• Demonstrate best practice in community recycling in ‘rural’ and ‘remote rural’ settings.

• Network communities from across the Cairngorms Park

• Develop partnership

• Highlight support currently available for community recycling

The event will include presentations from Andrew Thin, Convenor of the Cairngorms National Park Board, Susan Carstairs, SEPA, and Iain Gulland, CRNS, as well as a range of workshops led by experienced community recyclers.
